Phila Dlozi, born Siyabonga Mfekayi on 19 July 1998, is a South African Afro-Jazz and soul artist whose music is shaped by spirituality, resilience, and social storytelling. Raised in KwaSokhulu near Richards Bay, he grew up in a large polygamous family, where faith and creativity played a central role. He credits his musical calling to a formative dream in which his late grandfather entrusted him with a drum and urged him to heal people through music.
At 17, Phila left home to pursue his calling, performing at taxi ranks and shopping centres in Durban before relocating to Johannesburg. There, he endured months of homelessness while busking in Braamfontein, where a viral performance caught the attention of leading industry figures.
His career breakthrough came with the double-platinum hit “Idlozi Lami” alongside DJ Maphorisa and Boohle. Signed to Sony Music Africa, he released his debut EP Ekhaya koMama, which earned a SAMA nomination for Best Afro Pop Album. Subsequent releases such as “Babekazi,” “Ikhandlela,” and “Umdali” reinforced his reputation for spiritually driven Afro-Jazz, soul, and amapiano-influenced music. Influenced by legends like Busi Mhlongo and Oliver Mtukudzi, Phila often addresses social issues in his songwriting.
His growing impact has earned him major recognition, including African Icon Awards honours, Metro FM and SAMA nominations, and an invitation to attend the 64th Grammy Awards as part of South Africa’s delegation. He has also appeared in the international documentary Move Me South Africa, further cementing his presence beyond music.
